Internship | 3 months | 1–3 days per week | Unpaid (industry experience placement)

Why we’re running this program

BlueRoom was founded by a team with years of frontline and simulation experience, who’ve benefited from generous mentorship and support throughout their careers. We’re launching this structured internship program to pay it forward, offering meaningful industry exposure, hands-on guidance, and portfolio-grade Unreal/XR experience to help develop the next generation of Australian game and real-time 3D developers.

This is not a “do busywork” placement. Interns are treated like junior team members: you’ll be supported, reviewed, and guided, with clear goals and learning outcomes across the placement.

About BlueRoom

We build high-fidelity XR (VR/MR) training and simulation systems using Unreal Engine for government, defence, and healthcare customers in Australia and internationally. Our mission is to empower people to navigate critical situations through immersive, practical training.

The opportunity (what you’ll get out of it)

This internship is designed for recent grads / final-year students who want genuine experience in:

  • Unreal Engine (Blueprints and/or C++)
  • Building for XR and performance-sensitive real-time 3D applications
  • Working in a professional dev workflow (source control, tasking, QA, builds)
  • Exposure to customer demos, deployments, and real-world constraints
  • Mentorship from experienced developers and domain specialists

Where feasible, there may be opportunities to support demos/events and occasional travel as part of deployments.

Strong performance may be considered for future paid roles if/when they open, but this internship is first and foremost a structured industry experience pathway.

Commitment

  • Duration: 3 months
  • Time: 1–3 days per week (set days agreed upfront)
  • Location: On-site in Clayton South (hands-on hardware/XR work)

What you’ll do

Depending on your strengths and current projects, you might:

  • Implement interactions, UI, training flows, and simulation behaviours in Unreal
  • Build and iterate features via rapid prototyping and feedback
  • Assist with optimisation, testing, packaging builds, and bug fixing
  • Help integrate XR hardware and peripherals (where relevant)
  • Participate in stand-ups/reviews and learn professional delivery habits

What we’re looking for

Ideal for:

  • Recent graduate or final-year student in game dev, software eng, CS, or similar
  • Basic competence in Unreal Engine (coursework/personal projects totally fine)
  • Curiosity, reliability, and a “learn fast” mindset
  • Comfortable working on-site and collaborating in a small team

Nice to have:

  • Blueprint fluency and/or C++
  • Git/Perforce experience
  • Any VR/MR exposure or strong 3D fundamentals (maths, optimisation)

How to apply

Send:

  • CV
  • Short cover note (what you want to learn + what you’re proud of)
  • Links to work (GitHub / portfolio / itch.io / showreel / demo video)
