VR Mass Casualty Incident Simulator (Real MCI)

Real MCI was an early virtual reality mass casualty incident simulator developed in 2018 to support large-scale emergency response training.

The project was designed to place learners inside realistic mass casualty scenarios, allowing them to practise triage, scene management, communication, prioritisation and decision-making in a safe and repeatable virtual environment. At the time, Real MCI represented an innovative step in the use of immersive technology for emergency preparedness and clinical training.

Following its development, Real MCI was delivered to multiple Australian Defence agencies, ambulance services and universities, where it was used to expose teams to the complexity and pressure of major incident response without the logistical burden of running large physical exercises.

The platform helped demonstrate the value of virtual reality as a training tool for rare, high-impact events, including disaster response, multi-casualty triage and coordinated emergency management.

Real MCI has not been actively supported since 2022, but it remains an important part of BlueRoom's history in simulation-based training and laid the foundation for later immersive training projects across emergency services, healthcare and defence.
